Elise Dubach was born in Courrendlin, Canton Bern (now in Canton Jura) in Switzerland, on June 21, 1842.

[6]Soon after her birth, her family moved to a dairy farm on the southern slope of the Montagne d'Orvin, near Biel, Canton Bern. She immigrated to America in 1853, landing in new Orleans, and went on to pioneer the "Great American Desert" in Kansas. She eventually married Christian H. Isely.
